Artist in Residence Program
The Artist in Residence Program is a partnership between Roger Anton Elementary School teachers and artists from The Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa. Every classroom from Special Education and Transitional Kindergarten through sixth grade has 12 workshops (during the school day) with a professional artist and a culmination performance for parents and students. Each artist also provides an Evening Workshop for all of Anton's parents, students and siblings.
The Visual and Performing Arts disciplines are scheduled in a four-year rotation: Visual Arts, Music, Theater, and Dance.
This year's focus is Visual Arts and includes Karen Emonts (Mask Making: Calaveras Day of the Dead Masks, Aztec Mosaic Masks, and Peruvian Inca Metal Masks), Ellen Schulze (Puppets bringing the curriculum to life) and Eiko Amano (Japanese Brush Painting).
The Fine Arts Program also includes an annual Fine Arts Day with three assemblies and 29 student workshops provided by seven artists!
Each classroom enjoys an assembly and a workshop on that day. The artist workshops include:
Storytelling with a Kora (African Harp) – Baba, Art, and Technology – Lynn Okimura, Theater Games – Steve Hohman, Origami - Peggy Hasegawa Hip Hop – Michael Lor and Mime – Sharon Diskin. Award-winning performer Michael Katz is the assembly artist who presents a one-man show "The Adventures of Pinocchio!”
You’ll marvel at the transformations the artist makes to portray the characters in the
Carlo Collodi version of Pinocchio, where themes of friendship, respect, gratitude, and sacrifice are embedded into the original version of this beloved tale.
